Press Release: YDC send young Canadians to the 2017 Y20 Summit

Young Diplomats of Canada (YDC) is proud to send two of Canada's brightest young global leaders to attend the 2017 Youth 20 Summit (Y20) in Berlin, Germany from 1 - 8 June, 2017. The Y20 is the official youth-focused engagement group of the G20 and will bring together youth delegations from each member country. After negotiating on policy with the counterparts from other G20 states, the Y20 will culminate in the signing of a communiqué of policy recommendations for G20 leaders from the perspective of the block's youth. This outcome document will be delivered to G20 leaders when they meet in Hamburg this July.

After a highly competitive application process, we selected two leaders from a national pool of qualified applicants under the age of 27. YDC’s Y20 delegation will address critical issues facing the G20 from both a Canadian and global perspective, and publish written and video reports about their experiences navigating Germany and representing Canadian youth during the negotiations.

This year, the German Presidency has announced that Building Resilience, Improving Sustainability, and Assuming Responsibility will be top priorities of the G20 Summit.

Reflecting on this year's agenda, Delegate Loïc Bisson believes ‘’young Canadians are at the very centre of some of the most important challenges facing Y20 countries. Ensuring young Canadians are included in decision-making processes will help top decision-makers tackle issues like youth unemployment more comprehensively.’’

In anticipation of the event, Delegate Morrell Andrews is ‘’looking forward to working with delegates from each country throughout the stages to draft the communiqué and deliver it to G20 leaders to send a strong, unified message of cooperation from G20 youth. Including the Sustainable Development Goals as a focus of the overall Summit will also be a highlight … to mobilize youth to have an empowered role in implementing the 2030 Agenda.’’

Young Diplomats of Canada is the Government of Canada’s national nominating partner for Canada’s Y20 2017 Delegation.
