2022 G7 Youth Summit
The Y7 Summit will bring together youth delegates from all G7 member countries, the European Union, and guest countries to discuss and form policy suggestions. The Y7 Summit leads to the creation of a Y7 Communiqué that will serve as the official youth recommendations to G7 leaders in advance of their international summit.
The Y7 will take place in-person with each delegate representing Canadian youth on one of the following policy tracks: Economy, Climate, Digital, and Global Health. All delegates will also work collaboratively on negotiating recommendations for global Peacebuilding.
This year’s delegation is an accomplished group of young Canadians. They look forward to engaging with Canadian youth and other young leaders in preparation for the Y7 negotiations.
Prativa Baral, Head Delegate
Prativa is an epidemiologist, a global health consultant, and a doctoral candidate at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Concurrently, she is a consultant for the World Health Organization, investigating risk monitoring of upstream determinants of health in the context of health emergencies, as well as for the World Bank, monitoring disruption of essential services due to COVID-19. Most recently, Prativa helped support the United Nation's efforts in creating a research roadmap for COVID-19 recovery, and has also advised the Government of Canada in drafting the country's first comprehensive global health research strategic plan.
In 2018, she was selected to be a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum, and in 2021, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Prativa is a graduate of McGill University’s Faculty of Science and Columbia University’s Department of Epidemiology as a Merit Scholar Recipient. She is also a 2021 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholar as well as a recipient of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research’s Doctoral Foreign Study Award among other distinctions.
Fluent in French, English and Nepali, Prativa is a former nationally-ranked chess player. She regularly appears on CBC, CTV, and other media outlets providing Canadians with practical suggestions and advice regarding COVID-19.
Michael Lecchino, Communications Coordinator
Michael Lecchino is an Italo-Canadian student from Montréal, Québec. He is quadrilingual—fluent in English, French, German and Italian. His passions range from designing visual identity systems to exploring the great Canadian outdoors. Michael spent time studying in Germany and Italy which furthered his cultural knowledge and enabled him to look at issues using a unique lens.
Michael’s leadership and youth engagement experience consist of being class president for five years, student body president for one year and the president of his borough’s youth council. Throughout all three positions, Michael was responsible for representing the voices of students and young citizens. Michael often holds meetings with coordinators, directors and elected officials to address pressing issues and strategize possible solutions.
Working for Parks Canada, Michael has utilized his creative skill set to further the agency’s mission to protect and present Canada’s natural and cultural heritage. During the winter, you’ll often find Michael on the slopes teaching the sport he loves, snowboarding, to young students eager to become better athletes. Michael is honoured to represent Canadian youth and looks forward to bringing his cultural awareness, youth advocacy experience and media creation capabilities to the 2022 Y7 Summit in Berlin, Germany.
Jaya Scott, Engagement Coordinator
Passionate about climate justice as the intersection between human rights and the environment, Jaya is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Environmental Protection and Management at the University of Edinburgh. In 2020, she earned her BA from Western University with the Gold Medal in international relations.
in Victoria, BC, on unceded T’Sou-ke, Sc'ianew, Lək̓ʷəŋən, and W̱SÁNEĆ Territory, Jaya has worked on food security and sustainability at the grassroots level with the Capital Region Food and Agriculture Initiatives Roundtable, and on engaging youth in science education from a two-eyed seeing framework with Raincoast Conservation Foundation. She has been honoured to take part in empowering youth to advocate for climate as part of the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada Youth Advisory Council. She was energized by the council's work on the Uncovering Common Ground: Mobilizing Youth for Climate Justice initiative, and developed her advocacy skills as a 2021 Advocacy Fellow with Results Canada.
Jaya has represented her Canadian federal riding Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke at Daughters of The Vote and was a presenter and delegate for Canada at the 16th Conference of Youth, the pre-COP 26 youth conference held by the UNFCCC youth constituency in Glasgow.
Hargun Kaur, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator
Hargun is currently studying health sciences at McMaster University. As a first generation Canadian and woman of colour, Hargun’s leadership and community service is centered around advocating for more inclusive and resilient communities. Throughout the pandemic, Hargun has supported those most affected. She advocates for 25 000+ students as the McMaster Student Union's Associate Vice-President, represents young caregivers on CIHR's National Older Adult Advisory Council, and creates accessible education for youth using cannabis.
Hargun has also directly empowered vulnerable populations by making public health accessible for Canadians as the lead content developer with the South Asian COVID Task Force and ThisisOurShot vaccine confidence campaigns, creating care packages for pregnant individuals and isolated seniors, and volunteering with the Canadian Mental Health Association's support line. Hargun strives to continue working with, learning from, and empowering communities. In her free time, Hargun is found spending time with her family, listening to her favorite podcasts, or lost in a book.
As a delegate to the Y7 summit, Hargun hopes to elevate the diverse voices of Canadian youth to inspire global policymakers to rebuild more societies that enable and empower children and youth to grow and flourish.
