YDC Sends Young Canadians to the Participate in the 2021 Youth 7 Summit

Young Diplomats of Canada (YDC) is excited to announce the selection of a delegation of four of Canada's brightest young leaders to attend the 2021 Y7 Summit in the United Kingdom. In light of COVID-19, this year’s Y7 Summit will take place online from May 8-9 and May 14-15. The summit will bring together youth delegates from all G7 member countries and the European Union to discuss and form policy recommendations. The Y7  Summit includes the negotiation and formation of a Y7 communiqué for G7 leaders’ attention.

Delegates were selected from a competitive pool of applicants after a rigorous national competition. Biographical info on YDC’s Delegates to the 2021 Y7 Summit is accessible here. The YDC 2021 Y7 delegates are as follows:

  • Mojann Zibapour, Head Delegate;

  • Erika Dupuis, Communications Coordinator;

  • Carla Guillaume, Inclusion Coordinator; and,

  • Rahul Pallan, Engagement Coordinator.

The Y7 delegation this year comprises an incredibly accomplished group of young across Canada. Being from Calgary, Montréal, and Toronto, they represent the diverse and intersectional realities of Canadian youth.

It has never been more important that youth have a seat at the table in policy making and advocacy. The 2021 Y7 delegation is committed to ensuring that the priorities of Canadian youth are represented in looking to build back better for future generations and will apply an equitable and intersectional lens which prioritizes communities who are made vulnerable due to structural shortcomings.The Y7 delegation wants to make sure that Canadian young people are represented on the global stage, and wants to push for inclusive measures that address domestic and global issues covered by this year’s Y7 Summit. This year's themes for the Y7 include:

  • Health;

  • Economy;

  • Digital and Technology; and,

  • Climate and the Environment.

These priorities provide for policy recommendations to be developed with a youth-centric perspective.

“As we navigate our second year of the pandemic and digital Y7 summits, we are more committed than ever to advocate for prioritizing equity and inclusion of diverse youth voices as an active part of the decision-making process. Young people should have the right to a place at the table when leaders are discussing policies that will directly affect us,” said Head Delegate, Mojann Zibapour. “We have seen first hand how collaboration with other youth organizations across the G7, EU, and beyond has led to incredible opportunities for change and we hope to continue representing Canadian youth in the months to come with our 2021 Y7 communique.”

The Y7 delegation has done a nation-wide consultation of  Canadian youth and will be using what they heard to inform policy proposals on key issues affecting young people in Canada. Directly engaging global leaders in government and civil society provides an opportunity for the incorporation of youth perspectives within the highest levels of global governance.

Through the weeks of May 3rd and 10th, the delegates will be providing an inside look at the 2021 Y7 Summit and coverage of their engagements will be available through YDC social media channels. You can follow the delegation's live updates via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
